Our series continues as we talk to Kate Mordaunt, Head of Planning and Scheduling for BBC Two about what her job actually involves.

Job title: Head of Planning & Scheduling, BBC TWO
Department: Vision
Company: BBC

Describe your job in 1 sentence:
To provide creative vision, editorial and financial support to the Channel Controller and Genre Controllers in scheduling BBC TWO up to three years in advance.  To advise on the mix of programmes needed to deliver the most competitive schedule possible within the context of the channel’s long term strategic objectives and available funding.

What would your average day comprise?
Attending commissioning meetings to discuss updates on specific ideas/programmes and have new ideas pitched.  Speaking to producers about their programmes including any changes to the shape or anticipated delivery date of their show.  Watching each new programme as soon as it's available to make sure it's in the right slot in the schedule as well as making sure the BBC TWO schedule complements the rest of the BBC channels.

Do you need/use any particular qualifications?
No specific qualifications but an informed enthusiasm for TV and an editorial understanding of BBC channels will go a long way, plus experience of managing teams.

What skills do you think are important for your job?
Having an understanding of television commissioning and production processes as well as experience of audience research and understanding how audiences watch television.  An invaluable tip is not to be dispirited by criticism of the schedule – everyone has an opinion on scheduling so becoming Teflon coated is essential!

What were you doing 3 years ago?
Head of Planning & Scheduling, BBC ONE and BBC TWO Daytime which gave me invaluable experience of owning the schedule as prior to this I was Schedule Manager on BBC TWO.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
Being pitched to with new ideas in genre commissioning meetings where you see the original idea and watch it evolve and develop into a commissioned programme.

 Thanks Kate!
